What Are You Feeding the Puppies?

Time to talk about what the puppies are being weaned on and fed as they grow ... etc.

Remember to order your NuVet vitamins and the Potty Park from our website.  The potty park takes a while to get, so plan ahead.

The puppies are very good with the potty park, however, a small puppy doesn't have complete control of their bladder until they are 12-16 wks old and can be expected to know what to do by the time they are 20 wks old with reliable training.  A doggy door is an excellent way to teach lifetime good habits.

A small puppy can be distracted and easily exciteable, it's all in the planning for a new puppy.   Remember to give your puppy lots of time to relieve themselves with solid boundaries where to "go" and where not to go.  It really doesn't take as long as it sounds, just be fair to the puppy and give them a way to make good lifetime habits.

Best lifetime habits for a new puppy is "earned" and not giving the whole house right away.  They will need their safe area that they can't make a mistake.  I use exercise pens, potty parks, outside time that's ALWAYS observed unless they have a safe area already scanned for dangerous things and escape routes.  A small puppy will eat anything:  rocks, wood, grass, poisonous household things kept in the garage or shed.  Take this time to puppy proof your home for the new puppy coming home.  Set aside a place during the day in all weather that's a safe zone and inside sleeping area that they are comfortable and know it's there safe zone.

Please remember until your puppy has ALL of their puppy shots AND rabies shot, they are VERY susceptible to EVERTHING.
No parks or public places until the puppy has all of their shots plus their rabies shot.  Always protect your puppy/doggie.

Right now I have the big puppies (11 wks old) 8x8x4' tall kennel with two exercise pens that they can play with Pippa.  When there's "mistakes" of poo and pee elsewhere I make it smaller to remind them it's done on the potty park or outside, no exceptions.  Believe it or not ... they get it.  Poodles are smart, my adult poodles know when they haven't been completely good without being yelled at.  Poodles DO NOT need a heavy hand, they are naturally affectionate, cuddly and innately intelligent with good training.  If your poodle seems out of control ... it's something you are doing ... or not doing ... take them to a good quality positive dog training.

What is my puppy eating?
Puppies will be weaned on rice baby cereal in about a week.  Few days later I mix with chicken or lamb baby food and then a few days after that, beef.  About a week or so, I soften and squish in Fromm Puppy kibble.  About six weeks old I start to introduce just kibble which is crunchy and sharpens and keeps their teeth strong.

By 8 wks old, they will be use to (and spoiled) with Fromm puppy kibble, Orijin kibble, Stella & Chewy's meat patties, NuVet vitamins, they will know what raw dog food is like, cooked chicken breast, etc.  They will have eaten many times the "DE" (momma has had it from before they were conceived).  They will be extremely familiar to the potty park and expected to use it.

more details...

You can find "Fromm puppy kibble" at some pet stores.  To get the larger bag, I have to order it online.  PetFlow.com and PetFoodDirect.com have free shipping on order over $49.  If that's not something you want to do, puppies will also be feed "Orijin".  I feed our poodles holistic and organic kibble (Origin or Arcana).  I also add into the adult's food "Stella & Chewy" holistic patties which the puppies will also be introduced to as they grow.

I also ask that the new owners treat their new puppies as "holistic" as possible.  No topicals for fleas/ticks, no flea dips at the groomers, use hydrating (baby shampoo at first) shampoos, look for "holistic" and "organic" products.  I have our house sprayed "organically" instead of putting anything directly on the poodles.  I DO NOT HAVE FLEAS.  However, during the spring I can have problems with ticks which is very dangerous to the doggies ... Lyme Disease ... so, what I do a couple of times a month I add DiatomaceousEarth.com (www.HowToUseDiatomaceousEarth.com) human grade (very important to be "human grade").  to their food.  It's ordorless and colorless.  Please see the website before using, I suggest it.

The "DE (DitomaceousEarth) is a natural organic product from the floor of the ocean.  My husband mixes it with his morning drink.

BUT, I have to say, it helps 100% with ticks.  I have found a little bump on my poodles and sure enough it's a tick that dies instantly on the skin as soon as they try to feed on their blood, it works!  It's also effective limiting fleas, makes their poo less smelly and with using less grain or grain free foods, their poo will be 50% less than feeding the graining kibble (Eukanuba, Kirkland, etc.).  I suggest looking the overall for a great life with your puppy/doggie.  Who wants excess poo in the yard?  no me!

Another reason to feed less grain, holistically and organically is bloat.  It is not hereditary but what the doggie is fed.  When you feed only grainy kibble, the aweful rawhide toys (I do not suggest rawhide), etc., the doggie's belly will swell and flip twisting at each end.  It's horrible.  I lost my Irish Setter to bloat at seven years old, and honestly it was our fault she died like that.  I am adamant about what to feed my poodles, and so should you be.

There is no way to save a doggie with bloat.  The Pet Food Recall of 2007 and 2009 has changed how many people feed their doggies.  Since the "recalls" of so many of the dog foods (kibble & canned), most breeders started feeding "holistic, grain free" kibble and raw dog food.  I personally like raw dog food for the peaceful thought of not causing bloat.  However you have to add the raw chicken neck to their diet so their stools aren't too loose.  I don't like raw chicken necks, I know many breeders do, but I don't.  My poodles choke afterwards, I don't buy them.

I do however love the meaty raw "lamb bones" that OC Raw sells.  But, again, they are about 1.5 hours away and do not ship, so I have take a half of a day to have it on hand, and I have to have an additional freezer which during the hot months of summer we loose power and I don't want to have a full freezer of raw dog food go bad ... hence why I use and suggest the "Stella & Chewy" patties.

Another idea if raw dog food does not appeal to you?
A previous puppy owner's son is a veterinarian here in California and has formulated a mixture you add to cooked meat.  Search on "Balance It"  Mercedes has given "Roxy" (on our website) this mixture for quite some time and is very happy with it.  One of these days I will give it a try, but with five poodles and puppies, we are back to the additional freezer idea.

Always research for yourself
see BARF for the raw dog food

Pet Food Recalls and Food Safety

The massive pet food recalls of 2007 and more recently the pet food recalls of October 2009 have created new interest in the subject of pet food. Is it safe? How can we be sure?
Many people decided to feed raw foods (commonly called BARF - Bones and Raw Foods or Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods). Others decided to feed their pets home-cooked meals (Balance-It).

the other thing I tell my new puppy owners is to be proactive about over vaccinating your puppy.  Even my vet suggests soooooo many products for the poodles and PUPPIES!  I just about throw up!

so that's all for now, puppies are up walking, barking and playing.  I put them in the large whelping box in the kitchen and walk by slowly, I have several little faces watching me with their heads "foggily" using their eyes to follow me.  Their eyes look clear to me, but their little heads will kind of bounce as they follow me walk back and forth.  Three weeks old today!

I swear they are the cutest little puppies ever!

Pictures and weights

"the butterball litter"

appropriate for the holiday litter huh?
but they really are LOL

I am not saying what size these puppies will be until they are up and running off those bellies.  I price the puppies just before the personality testing.  The smaller kleins will be higher, the larger boy(s) maybe a girl, will be priced lower.  We breed for the small klein/moyen poodle, puppies are carefully priced accordingly.

Momma has such rich filling milk and she's so patient to lay with them, these puppies are the most over fed by momma puppies I've ever seen!  They really don't have a way to have a lot of size with their parents, but who's what size will be determined later.

The two smallest girls are holding with Georgia and Gypsy.  Georgia is starting to thin out and eats just enough to be full so she doesn't have the huge toad belly like her siblings, her weight is the most accurate for size out of these little butterballs.

A standard poodle puppy that will be 24-26"+ will weigh ~3.5-4.5# about three weeks old.  Our puppies will be 3 wks old friday.

Darling Gypsy looks like a little toad too, will most likely be the smallest ... but ya know, Georgia could prove to be the smallest when the day is done.  Time will tell.

Gregory is the big boy, could be about 21-23" full grown, I am guessing at this point he will be a small standard for $1500.

Georgia and Gypsy are the little girls, they'll be about 16-18"

Grigg I expect him to be Everad's size (18")

Most of the puppies will be mid-sized kleins (moyens interchangeable) in between the size of their parents (18-20")

By the way, these are sweet loving rolly polly puppies.  Healthy and strong, we love to marvel over them daily.  They are more and more in the kitchen area in the larger whelping box in the commotion and noise and the adult & big puppies' smells to socialize them.  They are really awesome little puppies ... but they are little butterballs!

enough talk, here's Hilde & Everad's beautiful babies

Georgia
red collared girl weighed 2#4oz today
Georgia was hungry but usually waits until the big puppies eat, then goes in for the food.  She's sweet, cuddly and gives out a yell if started.  At this age, their eyes are still not focused and blurry.   Her nails are white and lots of white tufts on the pads of her feet.

Gypsy
cream girl weighed 2#1oz today
Gypsy likes to cuddle with her siblings and momma most.  She climbs all over momma before she settle downs to eat.  She looks white with beautiful black pigmentation (stains is what it's called).  In this picture you can see she has cream going through her very light coat.  Miss Photogenic got lots of pictures published today.

Grigg
black collared boy weighed 2#3oz today
Grigg is a calm, thoughtful boy.  He will root away from you at this age to cuddle with momma and his siblings, but once I hold him he watches and listens, not much opinionated talk from him.  He's definitely the small boy and smaller than a couple of the girls.  Grigg had a good photo shoot today too, his nails are black with white tufts on the pads of his feet, his beautiful face catches your attention.

Gidget
lime green collared girl, weighed 2#9oz today
Gidget is searching and talking about things around her.  She seems most active and alert, she will cuddle and seems to catch my eye at first amongst the puppies.  She's a smaller move about little girl, her nails are black with white tufts on the pads of her feet.

Ginger
pink collared girl, weighed 2#14oz today
Ginger is pretty layed back.  Put her on the table to take her picture and she almost runs off.  She is still a young puppy and wants to be with her siblings.  Cuddling is an inquisitive "wow you are close!"  Socializing seems a comfort for her, she might be a social girl.  Ginger is "the black puppy"

Gervais
white collared boy, weighed 3# today
Gervais didn't weigh as much as I thought he would today.  He could very possibly be the 18-19" klein puppy that most of them will be.  He's fairly active, sweet, likes to cuddle.  Hmm, only a big belly picture for Gervais today.  I'll see if I can't get a better picture of him next time.  Just a little white tufts, I expect him to be a blue (looks black with some wondering white hairs like his momma).

Georgie
blue collared boy, weighed 3# today
Big Boy Georgie is what I call him, but he didn't weigh as much as Gregory.  Toad belly boy that's for sure, he stretches out and makes a meal out of cuddling with momma.  Sweet boy.  I seem to pick him up a lot.  He will fuss and then cuddle close.  Black nails, very little very white tufts.

Genevieve
purple collared girl, weighed 3#2oz today
oh geez, she's so cute, and she's a toad!  I put her on the table for her photo shoot, and she just looks at me. I turn the pad she's laying on to get a good shot, and she looks over her shoulder at me.  She just might thin down and get up and start running here in a couple of weeks.  She's going to surprise us, I can see it on her face ...  I havn't gotten going yet!  She's a sweet little girl.  Now that's a picture!  Very white tufts on the pads of her feet, but only the front, the backs are now black and so are her nails.

Gregory
yellow collared boy, weighed 3#7oz today
Big Boy Gregory, he's a doll of a puppy, he's like Genevieve, he's got plans to get going but a toad belly keeping him low to the ground.  He's a sweet puppy, not worried about getting a meal, he knows he can just go after what he wants and get it with no problem.  I seem to pick  him up a lot too.
He was more wiggly squiggly, one only good picture of Gregory today.  Gregory just like Genevieve has very white tufts, black nails but only the front feet have the white tufts.

Silver puppies are born black, lighten on their face & feet by six weeks old.
usually can tell who's changing to silver by 3 weeks old, these guys I see are going to make it challenging for me this time ... and then wha-la, one day their faces will be noticeably lighter.
p.s., having the blog and making more detailed notes helps a lot with the guessing game of color and size at almost three weeks old, but ya know, they have a lot more growing to do.

I do attempt to pick them up in different ways and set them down at differently.
It helps socialize them to small children when they get older.

Tentatively the personality testing is scheduled for the weekend of January 26-28th ... have some plans to finalize before I can say for sure.  Only the reserved list is invited, please no small children that will disrupt the puppies and only immediate families please.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

that's all I've got for you today, check back in a few days, will have more comments and pictures

blessings,
Paula and Jim

December 21st weights and pictures

Puppies' Eyes are starting to open
pictures coming tomorrow

did you know that silver puppies are born black?
they turn silver over time ... the blues and silver beige take the longest to change

a silver puppy will have a silver face by six weeks old, they start changing to silver about three weeks.  Between six and seven weeks old ... right before their Volhard aptitude testing ... I post the individual puppies' price and the color that will be on their AKC registration.  I encourage the people on the reservation list to pick according to "personality traits" but color is usually the first priority for most people.  If it's interest to you, the creams usually go first then the silvers, then the blacks.  This litter  most people are looking for a silver puppy.  Somewhere around the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 we will have a litter from a red momma (La Roux) and either Everad (a blue) or Wocky (a cream).
That will be fun to see the colors come out of that litter.
so yes, I like poodle colors too

here's the awesome little puppies and their pictures, weights and our comments of what we see about them today

Gervais

He's up on his feet learning to walk, its photo day for Gregory, good pics

Georgie
light blue collar, he was 11oz at birth, weighed 2# today
His eyes are open, he has white-ish nails and white hairs on the tufts of his pads of his feet.  We will know for sure if he's a silver boy or a blue boy by the time he is six to seven weeks old.

Gypsy
she's the only cream puppy out of a sea of little black puppies, she weighed 7 oz at birth.  Little peepers are open today.  Gypsy weighed 1#2oz today.  Perfect pigmentation for a cream puppy.

so I'm going to squish this in here,

Hilde's puppies seemed to have VERY full tummies after her milk came in, I thought they had a little too much diaherria so I took them into the vets.  They did a stool sample on the puppies and it came back clear, no worms or parasites ... excellent!

guess she's just over feeding them!
They are rolly poly little puppies, they are starting to change to their little individual selves ... over one week old.

here's their weights but I have to mention, they are really over full well fed puppies.  I really think they will balance out once they are about four weeks old.  I'm not guessing on the puppies' size until right before the personality testing ... except for big boy Gregory, he looks like he's from another litter he's so much bigger.

keep scrolling down, there's comparable weights from Everad's litter with Grace, these puppies really are small when you stack them next to puppies from last year that are now over one year old

below weights are from December 17th
pictures coming soon, today is grooming the adult poodles day

Gervais weighed 1#7oz
orange collared boy, either blue or silver

Gidget weighed 1#4oz
lime green collared girl, little silver girl

Ginger weighed 1#8oz
pink collared girl, the black girl

Big boy Gregory weighed 1#14oz
yellow collared boy, either blue or silver boy

Georgia weighed 1#4oz
I don't know how this puppy weighed that much, she's very little
red collard silver girl

Genevieve weighed 1#7oz
purple collared girl, silver girl

Georgie weighed 1#7oz
light blue collared silver boy
I can almost get him and Grigg mxed up, they are very similar, both silver boys

Gypsy weighed 14oz
the one and only cream puppy, she's tiny, weighed 7oz at birth

Grigg weighed 1#6oz
I can pick him out of the boys' pile, he's noticeably smaller
black collared boy, might change him to dark blue collar later, the small silver boy

pictures coming soon

ok
let's talk puppy size ... here's a comparison with Everad's puppies from Sept 2010 with Grace when they were about this litter's same age and what size they are now one year and three months old
Grace is 22 1/2"   -    Hilde is 21.5" about 15# lighter than Grace

Cova, 1# 10.5oz, black with wht on the pads of her feet
"Callie" is now under 18" tall and silver

Collette, 1# 9.9oz, cream

"Coephie" is now 18" tall and a beautiful pearl cream color (Fiona's housemate)

Claudia, 2# 3oz, black pads

"Chewbecca" is now 21" tall, a black young lady

Claire, 1# 11.9oz, the darkest cream

"Karma" black skin, white hair, little cream color on her ears, she's 19 3/4" tall about 22#
this is Fifi's carbon copy sister from G+E's repeat breeding Oct2011

Courtney, 1# 11oz, cream

"Cricket" is 17 1/2" tall, a beautiful cream colored young puppy

Carli, 2# 2oz, black

"Carly" is black girl about 19"

Cara, 1# 15.9oz, black

"Chula" is over 21", she's a beautiful black young lady

Conner, 2# 8.5oz, black, wht pads

"Teddy" is a silver male, probably larger than Arthur

Colby, 2# 0.6oz, black

"Celby" is 20" and black, a magnificent young man

Cory, 2# 0.8oz, black, wht pads

"Arthur" is a beautiful 23-24" silver male that looks just like her momma Grace

if you compare sizes of this litter and G+E's last year's litter

you will see this litter of puppies with Hilde and Everad will be smaller caniche moyen and very small standard poodles

I am confident these puppies will be smaller than last year's litter with Grace and Everad.

Puppies 6 days old

Yellow collared boy is Gregory, he's a big boy, small standard for sure
Little Gypsy as you can see growing just fine

lots of white nails and white tufts on these puppies
puppies that are silver will have silver faces by 4-6 wks old

Momma and babies are all doing well
